CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Brooklyn Sloane

November 2021

Friday—10:19 am

The short drive out to the Anderson residence had been wrought with tension. Joe had offered to drive, and Brook had taken him up on his offer, more so to give her a moment to think things over. She hadn’t brought up her knowledge of the affair between Benny Morgan and Vicki’s mother. At least, not yet. It would get them nowhere right now, and she needed Joe present when she questioned the Andersons.

It was evident that he wasn’t sure how to broach the subject of her conversation with his brother. He had to know that they’d spoken, given how long that she’d been outside. Silence reigned for the six minutes that it had taken to reach their destination. He had even pulled alongside the curb in front of a house that had seen better days, leaving the engine running.

Brook waited patiently, not even attempting to get out of the truck. She took her time reaching for the handle of her soft leather briefcase. It resembled more of a messenger bag, and she hadn’t been confident that she could leave the case files and her laptop at the station. Had it been more of a secure building, she wouldn’t have lugged everything with her to an interview.

“Benny and his son had nothing to do with Vicki’s murder.” Joe still couldn’t seem to bring himself to ask about her conversation with his brother. “I hope that your interviews with Meg and Tasha proved that and has you reconsidering Francis as a viable suspect.”

“Francis Walker doesn’t fit the profile, and neither do either of the Morgans.”

Had Brook had the time, she would have simply gotten out of the truck and went on about the day’s interviews. Unfortunately, he’d kept critical information regarding a case out of official reports for the sake of protecting those who he believed were innocent of a horrific crime. Had she not written the profile, she could have found herself wasting precious time searching for needles in a haystack.

Brook realized her view of the situation made her a hypocrite, but she was way past the point of caring about her self-image. Or his, for that matter.

“I gave you some of the other case files to review while I was speaking with Meg and Tasha. My profile of the unsub was included, so you know that we’re looking for a Caucasian male whose mother either died or left the family, leaving him with his father.” Brook slid the strap of her bag over her shoulder, grateful that the drizzle had finally come to a complete stop. The sky was still overcast with gray clouds, but at least the reprieve would allow them to reach the front porch without getting soaked to the skin. “You supply me with names of who fits my profile, and we can both save ourselves a lot of time.”

Joe apparently didn’t want to push the issue about his brother, and he nodded his agreement as he finally turned the key in the ignition.
